Saab Safir – legendary training aircraft at your event

The Saab Safir comes to you – the famous Lufthansa training airplane of the 50s and 60s appears at your flight day, your airport party and your airshow. Beaming in its Lufthansa branding it becomes the highlight of your flight event. With two of your guests at a time it takes off to fascinating panorama flights over cities and landscapes.

Even today the Saab 91B Safir D-EBED touches the hearts of many aviation enthusiasts. As of 1956, the plane served as a training aircraft after establishment of the Lufthansa Flight Training School; hundreds of junior pilots were trained in this aircraft up to 1967. Now the three-seater is ready to take off again after thorough restoration with loving care.

This type of aircraft was originally developed by Saab as a military trainer. The Safir is 7.90 m long, has a wing span of 10.60 m and weighs just over 800 kg. Equipped with a 190 hp Lycoming-O435A engine and a two-blade Hartzell propeller, it flies at a cruising speed of approx. 250 km/h over a distance of 1,000 kilometres. In its heyday the plane was not only used for training purposes, but also for postal, freight and passenger transport. At that time it was licensed for stunt flights and instrument flight training, though it was not suitable for all-weather operation.

After the complete overhaul the D-EBED has now been performing service as a traditional plane of the commercial pilot school run by Lufthansa Flight Training since spring 2003. In new splendour it stands ready for fascinating panoramic sightseeing flights over city and countryside. Two aviation enthusiasts in each case can take off with the pilot for a sightseeing flight in the observer's seat and flight instructor's seat.
