The Boeing 737 is the most successful jet airliner family of all time. It was developed by the American manufacturer Boeing in cooperation with Deutsche Lufthansa AG, so Lufthansa on Feb. 10, 1968 was the first airline to start scheduled operations with the new aircraft. It started with the same fuselage profile and the same cockpit shape as the B707 and B727, and the seat of the flight engineer had been waived.
Since then, the 737 sold more than 5,000 units worldwide; now it flies in its fourth generation. Although designed initially only for short distances, the airplane
flies today (as Boeing Business Jet BBJ) even non-stop from
Frankfurt to Los Angeles, Singapore and Tokyo. The aircraft ist still a little ridiculed because its wing span being as large as its body length. This stocky appearance earned it the nickname 'Piggy', and the favorite 737 parking space at the Frankfurt airport was called 'the Bay of Pigs'.
