The Avro RJ85 bridges the gap between the Canadair jet and the B737; the 'RJ' stands for RegioJet. The aircraft is built by Avro Intl. Aerospace, a 100% subsidiary of BAE. It has four modern, very quiet low-emission engines and gets on with extremely short and tricky runways. In this market segment a 'high-wing' layout is rather
unusual. Its advantage: it gives the engine
enough distance from the ground to avoid suction of mud and stones on
bad runways.
The circular fuselage diameter resembles that of the Boeing 737 permitting a comfortable cabin design in this rather compact aircraft. The cockpit displays are a combination of modern avionics with a conventional controller. And pilots say that thanks to the 'towed' landing gear that significantly lowers the impact, it feels like 'breathing down' the Avro to a landing.
