The four standard-fuselage aircraft series of manufacturer Airbus are called the Airbus A320 family. Standard-fuselage stands for six seats per passenger row, separated only by a central aisle. The product family also includes two shorter A318 and A319 types and the stretched version A321, all are medium-haul aircraft for commercial passenger aviation. The first A320 was delivered in 1988 and was the first civilian plane with the new revolutionary digital fly-by-wire controls. At that time the nickname 'Atari Plane' went around: "That aircraft is just a computer between two wings." Several crashes in the early years supported the concerns expressed in the pilot community. But the majority of pilots was convinced of the need to automate most of the monitoring functions, and now this aerospace technology is here to stay.
